 Steps

Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, yeast, sugar, and a pinch of salt.

Step 2: In a small saucepan, heat the milk until warm, then add it to the mixing bowl with the dry ingredients. Stir until well combined.

Step 3: Add the softened butter and the egg to the bowl. Mix everything together until a smooth dough forms.

Step 4: Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

Step 5: Once the dough has risen, heat vegetable oil in a deep pot or fryer to about 350°F (175°C).

Step 6: While the oil is heating, shape the dough into small balls, about the size of a golf ball, using your hands or two spoons. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Step 7: Carefully drop a few dough balls into the hot oil, being cautious not to overcrowd the pot. Fry them for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown, turning them occasionally for even cooking.

Step 8: Once cooked, remove the Quarkbällchen from the oil using a slotted spoon and transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil.

Step 9: Repeat the frying process with the remaining dough balls until they are all cooked.

Step 10: While still warm, roll the Quarkbällchen in granulated sugar until evenly coated. You can also dust them with powdered sugar if desired.

Step 11: Serve the Quarkbällchen warm or at room temperature. They are best enjoyed fresh, but they can be stored in an airtight container for a day or two.

Note: Quarkbällchen are traditionally filled with quark cheese, but this step has been omitted from the recipe. If you prefer a filled version, you can gently insert a small amount of quark cheese into the center of each dough ball before frying.
